Geodesic Dome

We're almost ready to begin construction of our Geodesic Dome shelter for Mars. There was some intense concentration today as the children used a small tool to make perforations in the cardboard so that we could fold them. Now we have our fingers crossed that we can put it all together. Pictures coming soon.

This week the children will be working in groups to research particular aspects of Mars. In class they will be using the information they have gathered to create a chapter for a book all about Mars. It is important that the children do not simply copy and paste information but that they re-write what they have learned in their own words. I have placed links to a few useful websites below. Remember the children can also access the World Book Online (a video on how to do this is available on the Parents page). They should also make use of any books or magazines they might have and the local library in Carrigaline would also have plenty of resources for the children to access.

Please remind the children to use a Creative Commons Search when they are looking for images to use in their projects. For simply viewing images they can use a standard Google Search.

Happy Learning. Don't forget to look to the south in the evenings. Mars is currently quite visible in the southern sky. It looks like a bright Red Star and is one of the first ones to become visible in the evenings (sometimes even before it gets dark).

Welcome to Mars

This year for Space Week we are going to focus on the Planet Mars.

During the week the children will be using Mars across all subjects in our Mission to Mars.

Over the course of the week the children will be growing their own food, cleaning water using filters and building a shelter to survive on Mars.

We will be putting the books aside for the week (apart from a book created by Cormac especially for the week) and really getting stuck in to planning, problem
solving and living on an alien planet.

Before we have even started though, Ruteesh has brought us in his very own Mars Rocket. We're on our way already.
